Finding Space to Choose Meditation

“Between stimulus and response -

there is a space.

In that space is our power

to choose our response.

In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

- Victor Frankel

Taking our seat upon the meditation cushion, we become our own monastery.

We create the compassionate space we need in our lives that allows for the arising of all things:

Sorrow. Loneliness. Shame. Desire. Regret. Frustration.

Our body, mind, and spirit come together in seated meditation.

Together, they are our monastery, and in our monastery we face all things.

We face them with love, compassion, appreciative joy, and equanimity.

Self-realization in all these manifestations is our practice.

Spiritual transformation is a process, and it happens this way.

Checking in with the body, we examine the six points of posture.

Seat, legs, torso, hands, eyes, mouth.

Now breathe. Focus on the breath,

Let everything else go, all concerns of the day, worries for the future,

Let everything else go and breathe.

Make a conscious choice to liberate yourself,

From all worry or concern.

Let it all go and just focus on the breath,

The Universe is taking care of everything else.

Feel the beginning of the inhalation and follow it through to completion.

Feel the space --

Feel the exhalation, and follow it through to completion.

Feeling the space between thoughts is like feeling the space between breaths --

Using your meditation to be awake.

To be mindful of what's going on inside your thoughts, your breaths,

Allows you to feel the space between the two,

And the space is the still point.

When you are able to clear away thoughts of the past and the future,

You slowly begin to get a sense of the space between the two.

When you feel the full flow of each inhalation and each exhalation,

you slowly begin realize the space between the two.

The space in - between thoughts,

Is the same as the space between breaths,

And In-between is an absolutely unique state of mind.

It’s more than mind,

It is pure awareness.

It is a dynamic state of consciousness,

It's contacting your very ground of being,

Your spiritual center,

Finding the space,

Is finding the still point.

It is finding your clear light mind of awareness --

It is finding your power to choose.
